África, escritura y emancipación. Conferencia de Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o en el CCCB

During the last few centuries, the Western has set itself up as the centre of the planet’s cultural power. The renowned Kenyan writer and scholar Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o proposes to move this centre out to the different cultural spheres of the world. In order to achieve this, one must understand the role of imagery, literature, and indigenous and supervening languages in both the domination and emancipation of the African post-colonial world.

To talk about all this, we are fortunate to have this writer with us on Wednesday, 10 May 2017 at 6.30pm at the CCCB - Barcelona Centre for Contemporary Culture. The entrance fee is € 3 (free for Friends of the CCCB, the unemployed, holders of the Catalan teacher’s card and pensioners with the Pink Card). The conference languages will be Catalan and English.

Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o will be introduced by Carles Torner who is a poet, novelist and essayist, winner of the Critics’ Prize for Catalan poetry and current executive director of PEN international.

Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o is one of the most important writers in Kenya, translated into more than thirty languages and always one of the front-runners for the Nobel Prize for literature. He came to the public’s attention as a writer in 1964 with Weep Not, Child, and then produced a significant number of novels, plays and stories in English describing Kenya’s political, cultural and social problems. His criticisms of both English imperialism and the post-independence governments provoked his exile from 1982 to 2002. Since then, his academic career has continued at a number of universities in the United States, where he has reflected on Africa’s indigenous cultures and literature and has published several essays that have provided the basis for many postcolonial theories. Siince 1981, he has prioritized Kikuyu, his mother tongue, in his literary creation. Debolsillo has published in Spanish El diablo en la cruz (May 2017), Un grano de trigo (May 2017), Descolonizar la mente (2015) and El brujo del cuervo (2015), and Rayo Verde has translated Sueños en tiempos de guerra (2016) and Desplazar el centro (May 2017).

This talk by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o is part of Kosmopolis, a cycle of literary activities taking place at the CCCB throughout 2017. Kosmopolis. La fiesta de la literatura amplificada (Kosmopolis. The amplified literature festival), is a biennial festival dedicated to literature in all its aspects. Kosmopolis’ continuous programming is a schedule of dialogues, workshops, conferences and concerts that keep the spirit of the festival alive throughout the year and from one festival to the next.
