VI Congreso Internacional AIETI

More than 200 researcher will attend the 6th International Congress on Translation and Interpretation  organised by the Iberian Association of Translation and Interpreting Studies (AIETI) and that is held at the University of Las Palmas of Gran Canaria from Wednesday  23rd to Friday 25th January  2013.

At AIETI6, 224 researchers from 19 Spanish universities and others from Germany, Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Ivory Coast, Cuba, U.S., Italy, Mexico, Norway, Poland, Portugal, United Kingdom, Sweden and Switzerland will take part.

The congress will have seven simultaneous halls, amongst which we find Casa África's Nelson Mandela Auditorium, which will cover aspects such as the history of translation, training of translators and interpreters, specialised translation (where we find highlighted literary translation and many other panels dedicated to dubbing, subtitling and accessibility), social and conference interpretation, and empiric investigations with approximations such as computational linguistics, cognitive sciences and corpus studies.

The opening ceremony for the International Congress will take place on Wednesday 23rd January at 10.00a.m., at the Edificio de Humanidades (Campus del Obelisco), with the presence of the Vice-rector of Culture, Sport and Integral Attention, Isabel Pascua, and the coordinator of the meeting and senior lecturer of ULPGC, Ricardo Muñoz. The closing ceremony will take place on Friday 25th January, at 5p.m. in the same building.

As part of the congress' activities, on the 21st and 22nd about a score of leading researchers from Europe and the U.S. will meet in Puerto de Mogán to debate, behind closed doors, on the research lines for the coming decade. Coinciding with this parallel session, the Conference of University Centres and Departments for Translation and Interpretation (CCDUIT) will also meet at the Rectorate, which is why Las Palmas of Gran Canaria becomes the Spanish capital for translation during an entire week.

During the ten years it has been going, AIETI has held congresses in Granada, Madrid, Barcelona, Vigo and Castellón. From the interim balance of activities we should highlight that in line with its founding objectives, AIETI has contributed to encourage reflection, research and teaching of this discipline, and that has encouraged research internationally.

In the course of the sessions there will be four plenary conferences by Fabio Alves, on the Studies of Translation and Interpretation in Brazil (Wednesday 23rd, 10.30a.m.); Elena Pérez, on Translating in Spain today (Wednesday 23rd, 4p.m.); Isabel Durán, on Terminological and Translation Resources (Thursday 24th, 4p.m.); and Franz Pöchhacker, on Interpretation studies focused on from the South (Friday 25, 4p.m.).
