El Club de Lectura de la Universidad de Cádiz lee a Emmanuel Dongala

Literature is without a doubt one of the essential ways of bringing us closer to the African continent's social, political and cultural reality. However, a Spanish reader's access to that literary production is very limited, for reasons such as translation and the lack of inclusion into our country's book market.

Casa África, in its role of bringing Africa and Spain closer through vehicles such as culture and the promotion of the huge literary production from the African continent, once again collaborates this time with the French and English Philology Department of the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts of the University of Cádiz  and which has chosen the work to be read as El fuego de los orígenes, by the writer from the Congo Emmanuel Dongala. Casa África has supplied 23 copies for this reading club’s members, who will debate on the work on 21st November 2012 from 1pm onwards.

The work selected belongs to Casa África's Literature Collection, which in collaboration with Ediciones El Cobre-El Aleph, aims to translate the most important titles in African literature into Spanish, not only from well established writers but also those who are just emerging.

The contrasts of his work El fuego de los orígenes make it a complete fresco of Africa's colonisation and independence. Mandala Mankuku, "he who overturns the powerful ones", finds himself facing the dilemma of keeping tradition or submitting himself blindly to it. Through the passionate narration of his life, important questions that have always affected man are asked: Is progress an escape towards the future? Can man survive the anguish of nothing? Is a society that cannot accept differences fair? Is love stronger than laws? With a rich, colourful language, this marvellous novel traps us in its new light.
