Taller de danza africana en Masdanza 2017
The Canary Islands International Contemporary Dance Festival, MASDANZA, was born in Gran Canaria in 1996 on the initiative of Natalia Medina, director since its inception, and is supported by the Department of Culture of the City Council of San Bartolomé de Tirajana.
To strengthen the African presence in the festival, Casa África is collaborating with Masdanza and contributing to the promotion of this competition in Africa.
MASDANZA has two official competition sections: the Solo Contest and the Choreography Contest.
Casa África and its Africa in Movement programme continue to support contemporary African dance through different performances. This time, Casa África is bringing to the festival a contemporary dance workshop on the Germaine Acogny Technique which will be led by Aida Colmenero.
To date, the Germaine Acogny technique is the only contemporary dance technique created in Africa that has been codified and recognized. It is based on traditional African dance (mainly from Senegal and Benin) and on contemporary Western dance techniques (classical dance, Graham technique and release). It is a re-contextualization of traditional African dance in today’s world, where the body is conceived as a complete being, enjoying and working to be healthy, present and vital. Respecting each unique and different body.
The workshop venue is still to be confirmed, as the registration made through the Natalia Medina School of Dance has exceeded all expectations. It will be on 30 and 31 October and 2 and 3 November from 8:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. each day. During each workshop, there will be live percussion by the Thioune Brothers (Senegal).
The 22nd CANARY ISLANDS MASDANZA INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF CONTEMPORARY DANCE will be held from 14 to 21 October 2017 in Maspalomas, Gran Canaria and then performances will continue across the Canary Islands until 4 November.
