Letras Africanas: SILA EDUCA 2016

The International African Book Fair (SILA) has been held since 2003 to promote African literature by bringing us into closer contact with it. It includes various activities, including SILA Educa, aimed at bringing secondary school students in Spain into direct contact with African literature.

The literary sector plays an important role in the cultural relationship between the Canary Islands and Africa. Therefore, in its role as a promotor of economic development, Casa África offers its ongoing support to SILA. In this particular case, Casa África brings the presence of Ngari, Senegalese griot to the SILA Educa initiative. Ngari is taking storytelling sessions and workshops to young people from different municipalities of Tenerife. Through this, students will learn how important the oral tradition is in the culture of many African countries that preserve the historical memory of their people through this important transmission mechanism.

Casa África offers support to this initiative through its African Letters programme, which was founded in 2009 with the aim of bringing the major voices of contemporary African literature to the Spanish public.

This initiative has the support of the Deputy Ministry of Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands, Mirmidón Productions and the Schools without Borders Network and will take place from 16 to 19 November 2016 in the Public Library of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The main objectives of SILA are to act to enhance cultural proximity to Africa, using books and various literary events as working tools; to develop the Canary Islands as the primary meeting point for learning about African literary culture and to encourage the building of bridges between the two continents.

Casa África has been part of this initiative since 2008 and will be present again this year to strengthen this bridge and platform that encourages cultural exchanges and relations, leveraging the Canary Islands’ tricontinental position at the crossroads between Africa, America and Europe.
