II Tech Forum: ciudades y destinos inteligentes

A “Smart City” is one which uses information and communication technologies to improve the quality of life and services in the city, and make it a more sustainable space. The design and implementation respect the city’s current and future economic, social and environmental needs.

A smart city is a cross-sector initiative which has an impact on areas as diverse as energy, water, transport, waste management and administrative and health services. Smart cities help to relieve resource depletion, global warming, population explosion, urban concentration and shifts in global economic balances.

In 2015, Africa was the least urbanised region in the world (only 40% of the population of sub-Saharan Africa lived in cities), however it is now the second fastest urbanising region in the world after Asia. Demographic experts predict that by 2020 Africa will overtake Asia, partly because currently only 40% of the population of Sub-Saharan Africa lives in cities.

Given this rapid growth, now is the time for African managers to incorporate smart cities into their socio-economic and urban development strategies.

Given the Canary Islands’ know-how in the tourism sector and the enormous potential of this sector in Africa, the forum will also analyse the trends in Smart Destinations. These destinations add value by incorporating technology-based solutions which improve the customer experience, the efficient management of systems and resources and their impact on the environment, thus differentiating themselves from traditional destinations.

This know-how is backed by the firm commitment of the main cities in the Canary Islands to digitise themselves through smart city strategies to manage their space more efficiently and offer their citizens services based on new technologies.

To talk about all this, Casa África is organising its II Tech Forum with smart cities as the central theme. The meeting will take place on 25 and 26 October 2018 at the headquarters of Casa África (Alfonso XIII, 5. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria).

The meeting is being organised by Casa África in collaboration with the Canary Islands’ Technology Excellence Cluster; PROEXCA; the Society for the Economic Promotion of Gran Canaria (SPEGC); and the Canary Islands Agency for Research, Innovation and the Information Society of the Government of the Canary Islands (ACIISI)

The meeting agenda will include political and technical officials from smart cities in Africa and the Canary Islands; those responsible for tourism development strategies (Smart Destinations) in African countries and cities in the Canary Islands; and technology companies which specialise in providing intelligent urban solutions.

In the case of Africa, priority will be given to African cities close to the Canary Islands, such as Praia (Cape Verde), Nouakchott (Mauritania), Agadir and Casablanca (Morocco), Dakar (Senegal), Abidjan (Ivory Coast) and Accra (Ghana), as well as the Azores and Madeira.

This II Tech Forum of Casa África is focused on the business owners, investors, suppliers and start-up companies committed to the ecosystem of smart urban solutions.
