I Muestra de Cine Casa África

With this Casa África Film Cycle, we hope to offer a representative selection of the creative wealth and narrative that distinguishes the seventh African art in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

With a selection of  daring and innovative titles, created by contemporary film-makers from different regions of the continent, this Cycle will allow us to discover new visions on the multiple realities of a whole continent, which still too often, continues being reduced to a few negative stereotypes. At the same time, the programme also includes some Spanish documentaries where we shall see, through different viewpoints, other possible angles on  Africa at the moment.

The film-makers selected in this Cycle question the cultural, political and social reality, making the spectator reflect and offer unprecedented points of view in our country. They are citizens of the world and, as such, share aesthetic codes with other  film-makers, to which they provide their own specificities as a result of a wide range of individual and local cultures  interlaced in the global world of today.

The African cinema presented here shows that, instead of surrendering to a dominant global standard and trying to comply with Euro-American trade dictates, it wants to keep reaffirming its own cultural identity beyond foreign influences. In other words, these are films without inhibitions that are characterised by great artistic originality and an excellent way of dealing with humour.

These films have been received with surprise and empathy by a spectator that was previously sceptical due to a lack of knowledge and the limited distribution of these films in our cinemas. These films are a small demonstration that Africa makes cinema, and very good cinema.

Thanks to the seventh art and its ability to break boundaries and open up new horizons, with this first Casa África Film Cycle we hope to sharpen the sensitivity of the spectator before an unknown world, while at the same time foster inter-cultural dialogue.
