Club de lectura en lenguas africanas: Wolof con Boubacar Boris Diop
In its work to bring African writing to the public, Casa África is taking another step forward by bringing a new activity to the Canary Islands’ African population. The success and longevity of our Reading Club in Spanish is now well established. Through it we’ve read several works by African authors translated into Spanish, many of them from our Literature Collection. This new activity aims to get closer to those in the African population who speak African languages as well as Spanish. There are thousands of these languages spoken today in Africa, including Wolof, Bambara, Swahili, Fang and Bubi.
For this first African Languages Reading Club, we’re taking advantage of the visit of Boubacar Boris Diop to Gran Canaria. The Senegalese author will speak to us in Wolof and French about his new book, Bàmmeelu Kocc Barma and also about Domi Golo (El Libro de los Secretos - The Book of Secrets) which was co-published in Spanish by Casa África and Almuzara. The meeting will be open to anyone who wants to participate.
This first meeting will take place on 5 March at 7:00 p.m. in Casa África and will inaugurate the Casa África African Languages Reading Club. Attendees will be provided with a password so that they can read the electronic book.
To raise awareness of this activity, Casa África has had the invaluable collaboration of Luc André, president of the Federation of African Associations in the Canary Islands (FAAC) and Mame Cheikh, a student of the Masters in African Studies at the ULPGC and coordinator of a young people’s association.
