Club de Lectura Casa África: 'El otro pie de la sirena' de Mia Couto
The work of Mia Couto, El otro pie de la sirena (The Mermaid´s Other Foot), will be discussed, corresponding to the second title of the Casa Africa literature collection.
Mia Couto (1955) is the most internationally renowned Mozambican author. In his lastest novel, two story lines alternate, but at the same time they are integrated by small, intertwined stories, like in a set of those African (and Chinese) carved wood boxes that contain smaller ones. In all of his fiction work, Mia Couto plays with the language and creates neologisms, alters syntaxes, and makes use of verbal traditions and proverbs. He talks about Mozambique, Africa, identity, memory, and of collective amnesia.
In this work, several journeys cross paths in this work by one of the most acclaimed authors of the Portuguese language. The Portuguese missionary, Gonçalo da Silveira, follows the unattainable dream of a continent converted to Christianity. The young Mwadia Malunga makes real the impossible return to childhood. A couple of African Americans pursue the illusion of a re-encounter with a magical place...
