Seminario: estado de las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación en África
Casa África last year sponsored the African presence in what was the event to present the UNESCO chairfor research into Communication and Africa, AFRI- COM, from the University of Rey Juan Carlos (URJC-UCAC).
One of the main pillars of this Chair is the setting up of this Permanent Seminar on Communication and Africa and this time, the main guest is Dr. Fackson Banda (UNESCO), who has been invited by Casa África and will deal with two main topics: the communications landscape on the African continent and the proposed Curriculum to train journalists launched by UNESCO. All his speech will be broadcast in streaming through www.catedraunesco.africom.urjc.es.
In 2008 Dr. Fackson Banda won the MISA Prize for Freedom of the Press and belongs to the UNESCO Chair for Media and Democracy in the School of Journalism and Media at the University of Rhodes, Grahamstown, South Africa.
Scholar of African political thought and media, Banda has published in the fields of post-colonial theory and media, technology and development, civic education and communication as well as community and political media, among others.
Prior to his appointment at Rhodes University, Professor Banda worked as executive director of Panos Southern Africa, an organisation dedicated to communication and sustainable development. Currently he is a columnist in the Zambian newspaper The Messenger and member of the Advisory Council of the AfriCom Chair.
The seminar will be held on the 23rd April 2013 at the Faculty of Communication Sciences at the Campus of Fuenlabrada.
The morning session, which will start at 10:00am, will take place in Classroom 007 of the lecture room building. It will be opened by Mr. Rafael Ángel García, Vicer-rector for Research at URJC and Ms. Carmen Caffarel, Chairman of the AfriCom Chair. Later Dr. Banda, Lola Huete and José Carlos Sendín will take part.
This first session will be devoted to delving into and analysing the communication landscape in Africa, placing a special emphasis on current debates: regulation of the Internet, media 2.0, different media traditions, alternative media and the media's contribution to the building of consolidated democracies. The proposal of the Curriculum launched by UNESCO to train journalists will also be analysed.
The afternoon session, which will start at 16:30pm, will take place in the Meetings Hall in the Management Building. Dr. Banda, and Mr. Antonio García, assistant director of the UNESCO Chair will take part.
This chair aims to become a centre of excellence and innovation by establishing partnerships with universities in Africa in order to develop joint research into communication processes and their relationship with social transformations, with a special focus on African societies
