Residencia coreográfica de Roberto Olivan de la Iglesia con Gregory Maqoma

Casa África and its programme Africa in Movement continue to support contemporary African dance through choreographic residencies, as it has previously done with other companies from different countries. These residencies are created to take in dancers and choreographers during short periods of time so that we can collaborate in developing their creations at their installations.

On this occasion the dancer Roberto Olivan de la Iglesia has been invited to undertake a choreographic residency with Gregory Maqoma in Johannesburg from 27th April to 14th May 2014.

The main objective of this choreographic residency is to launch the creation of the piece "Lonely Together" which will then be presented as part of the Grec Festival of Barcelona in July 2014. It is a 60-minute dance piece created by both dancers. A project that began with a vision of South-South cooperation.

These two choreographers and dancers, Gregory Maqoma and Roberto Olivan, trained in the P.A.R.T.S school of Anne Teresa Keersmaker (Belgium) and now both are at the zenith of their respective careers with a past in which they have more in common than could previously seem.

This proposal by Mercat de les flors and the Grec Festival of Barcelona once again reunites these two choreographers to close the circle from their training days and come together in the maturity of their own artistic careers. The project will have several phases of creation with residences in Barcelona and Johannesburg, to feel the reality of each of the creators.

The planned timetable for this choreographic residency is as follows:

  • From 27th April to 14th May 2014 Creation period in Johannesburg
  • From 22nd June to 8th July 2014 Creation period and rehearsals in Barcelona
  • 9th and 10th July 2014 Première of the play in Barcelona, as part of the Grec Festival
  • 2nd and 3rd September 2014 Première of the play in South Africa, as part of the Dance Umbrella JHB Festival

The Africa in Motion programme is a Casa África initiative to promote the presence of African performing arts in Spain, with the premises of public diplomacy that this institution applies for acts of cultural cooperation, avoiding paternalism and making these disciplines a factor of rapprochement between Africa and Spain.
