Presentación de la publicación "Elder Dempster. Precursores del comercio en África Occidental 1852-1972/1973-1989"
The University of Las Palmas of Gran Canaria has undertaken the translation and in collaboration with the Fundación Puertos de Las Palmas and the Fundación Canaria Archipiélago 2021, has edited the book Elder Dempster. Precursors to trade in West Africa1852-1972 | 1973-1989, by the author Peter N. Davies, senior lecturer at Liverpool University.
This work focuses on the description and analysis of the economic history of the British shipping company Elder Dempster and its predecessors. It covers the relationships between the United Kingdom and West Africa from the middle of the 19th century and a large part of the 20th century, including the Canary Islands, when the economy became global due to the success of the industrial revolution.
Its author, Peter N. Davies, offers a positive view of the action and presence of this company and other European companies in Africa, in contrast with the interpretations that question the beneficial contribution of European economic agents in this continent.
The commercial contacts that were set up at that time are analysed through the trajectory of a mainly maritime company, Elder Dempster, which was key to the occupation of the West African coast by the British Empire.
This text, a reference of English business history is important to be able to understand Africa's recent history and its relationships with European imperialist powers. Its content is part of the historical, strategic and economic coordinates of the imperialist expansion, to the extent that the powerful English flag merchant navy made the larger ports of the Canary Islands, that is, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas of Gran Canaria, a support area for its empire in Africa and also for the different sailing lines that were travelling from Europe to other parts of the world.
Casa África now welcomes at its headquarters the presentation of this work's translation undertaken by ULPGC at an event that will take place on 29th January at 7p.m. at the Nelson Mandela Auditorium of this institution (C/. Alfonso XIII, 5. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria). Free admission.
