Periplo 2016 - Festival Internacional de literatura de viajes y aventuras
Periplois the International Festival of Literature of Travel and Adventure which has been held in Puerto de la Cruz since 2013. This is a pioneering project in Spain, focussing on literary tales of travel and adventure through a structure which incorporates all formats capable of collecting and communicating the transformative experience of travel.
Javier Reverte, Antonio Lozano and Pepe Naranjo are some of the authors already confirmed for this event which will take place from 10 to 16 October 2016.
Casa África, through its African Letters programme, is collaborating with this festival making possible the participation of the Senegalese writer Ken Bugul in Periplo. His almost biographical work includes titles that have established him as one of the great African writers of this century. He will participate on Saturday 15 October as part of Periplo and also as part of the 29th Festival of the South - Three Continents Theatre Encounter.
Going beyond the annual presentation of a catalogue of new developments in the travel literature sector of publishing or of a number of current authors, Periplo aims to take a leading role in this literary form, spreading the knowledge and global vanguards of the discipline. Therefore, the festival includes the genre’s production and manifestation in other artistic languages, including cinema, theatre and music.
From Periplo’s perspective, the public are shown that adventure travel is not only derived from travelling through new or known territories, but is also the process of discovery, recognition and inner transformation that every good journey awakens in the traveller.
The object of Periplo, therefore, is the journey, the route and its events, but also the journey become unique personal experience, transformed into creative and artistic experience and understanding.
Periplo includes all formats which can express the story of a journey: the literature which becomes the printed book, that which reaches readers through a blog, that which is transmitted through the most advanced technological applications, that which remains in the traveller’s notebook, that which is contained in the instant synthesis embodied in the photo, film or postcard, or that which emerges in a creative experience expressed in music or on stage.
With the creation of Periplo, the Department of Culture of Puerto de la Cruz aims for the municipality to be a global meeting point to discuss the two sides that have shaped the history of the city and its people: travellers and culture. It aims to discuss the old human aspiration to know through the journey, the influence of migration throughout history, the role of travel in scientific knowledge and the transfer of the travel experience to the world of art, tourism and other fields where travel and adventure have been present.
