Mesa Redonda – Mujer y Ciencia
Casa África is joining the events that are taking place worldwide to celebrate International Women’s Day by hosting this round table at its headquarters to discuss joint work in medical technology. The aim is to highlight the role that women have always played in science, although this is often still not recognised today.
The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, through its Interreg-MAC Project on Medical Technology for Sustainable Development, MACbioIDi, and in collaboration with Casa África, is organising a Round Table on “Women and Science”. Professionals from the worlds of science, medicine and engineering will participate to share their experiences and highlight the role of women in the world of science. They will discuss the advances that have been achieved worldwide in the 20th century and the challenges are still to be addressed as we move through the 21st century.
The round table will be composed of five professional women from countries which are as different in their individual characters as in their scientific and technological development: Morocco, Mozambique, Cape Verde and the Canary Islands. The panel will discuss the daily challenges of living in a world in which men have been in charge of initiative and recognition, and will propose ways of consolidating the role of women in the scientific world and their contribution to its development and prestige. Due to the exponential changes that we are currently experiencing, we need to look for new ways of developing and recognising women in all areas of the scientific world.
Gender equality forces us to work to correct the imbalance caused by the scarce presence of women in the scientific world. We must therefore work to encourage advances in promoting of the role that women should play, incorporating the perspective of gender to science, in all its spheres and areas of influence.
With the tagline “Women in Science and Technology” this round table brings together the following women from the different countries:
- Dr María Alexandra Fernandes, Professor at the Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) of Maputo, Mozambique
- Dr Joseane da Rosa de Pina Ferreira, Director of the Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging Service at the Dr Agostinho Neto de Praia Hospital, Cape Verde
- Yolanda Martín, Telecommunications Engineer at the Astrophysical Institute of the Canary Islands
