Masdanza 2017
The Canary Islands International Contemporary Dance Festival, MASDANZA, was born in Gran Canaria in 1996 on the initiative of Natalia Medina, director since its inception, and is supported by the Department of Culture of the City Council of San Bartolomé de Tirajana.
To encourage an African presence at the festival, Casa África is collaborating with Masdanza and contributing to the promotion of this competition in Africa. The contest has been consolidating year after year, changing in character from a regional to an international event, gaining fame beyond our borders and opening up to the participation of artists from other latitudes.
Thanks to the presence of a growing number of spectators attending each year, and their curiosity to discover new artists and trends, this Festival has been able to affirm itself as a leader both nationally and internationally.
MASDANZA has two official competition sections: the Solo Contest and the Choreography Contest. Casa África and its Africa in Motion programme continue to support contemporary African dance through various activities. In this case, it will support the presence of the African companies selected to participate in the 2017 Festival Masdanza, as well as their tour of other islands through artistic residencies once the festival has ended.
The 22nd CANARY ISLANDS MASDANZA INTERNATIONAL CONTEMPORARY DANCE FESTIVAL will be held from 14 to 21 October 2017 in Maspalomas - Gran Canaria - the Canary Islands - Spain. Groups interested in participating in the Choreography Contest and/or the Solo Contest must submit their proposals between 1 March and 30 June 2017.
Participation is open to artists of any nationality. They may participate with original pieces or pieces which have been created and premiered since 1 January 2015. The duration of the work may not be less than TEN minutes NOR more than FIFTEEN. In the case of the choreography contest, the pieces must have a minimum of TWO (2) dancers and a maximum of FIVE (5).
