Lucha por el Cambio Social

The 27th November 2012 will be the day that Luís Padilla Macabeo, Economist and Casa África's General Secretary will take part in the talk "Canary Islands and neighbouring African
countries" and contribute in this first module for social change organised by the Manuel Velázquez Cabrera Foundation of the Canary Islands.

The current economic crisis, can make us forget what is profound and fundamental because of what is urgent and immediate. The need to improve economic productivity, lower unemployment rates, emerge from the recession (what is urgent and immediate) should not stop us confronting today's and every day's great challenge: building a fair society, changing the model of society. This is what is profound and fundamental. Struggle for social change is one of humanity's great aspirations and nowadays this struggle has become an enormous task.

Manuel Velázquez Cabrera was a fighter for justice. He made the cause for the marginalized islands of the Archipelago his, and worked tirelessly to change the organisational model that had been imposed by the hegemonic islands. Two years before he died, he left written one of the convictions that drove him
during his whole life written down:

" If man's first concept is not justice, humanity will not be able to have happiness, of which he is susceptible " [Diary, 23rd September 1914]

Inspired by someone who was one of the fathers of the Cabildos of the Islands, whose centenary is still celebrated, the thoughts and debate of the Foundation which has his name focus on discovering paths that lead to social change. It is important not just to overcome the crisis, but to emerge from it having achieved greater justice in the form of organising society. A society with more solidarity and fraternity.

The Classroom for the Struggle of Social Change consists of a training process, which in fulfilling the Foundation's objectives, is offered for the eleventh year in a row, during the afternoons on a
Monday or Tuesday every fortnight, over eight months, to all interested parties.

The Classroom is organised by the Manuel Velázquez Cabrera Foundation of the Canary Islands and is backed by the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo de Fuerteventura and Tuineje Town Council together with the financial collaboration of some companies.

The Classroom is aimed at everyone, young people and adults, who are actively participating in the island's social, cultural and political life or who are interested in current affairs, with its main objectives being those listed below:

  • To offer a training instrument to people who are interested.
  • To make available to people who live in Fuerteventura dialogue and debate with important people in political life, with specialist university professors from the Canary Islands, Spain, Europe and the World, as well as get to know the experiences and thoughts of other places and cultures.
  • To create a permanent space for debate on the current social, cultural and political problems of Fuerteventura and the Canary Islands.
  • To contribute in building a Civil Society through democratic and pluralist
    dialogue.

The 2012-2013 course for the Class "Struggle for Social Change" will be held every fortnight, through a class, with dialogue and debate, on Mondays or Tuesdays at 8.00pm as listed in the Programme and Calendar.
