III Camp Internacional Rotary Maspalomas: «Talleres sobre la paz»
The XXV Maspalomas Summer University will offer 25 educational activities, notably including the III Maspalomas Rotary International Camp: Peace workshops, to be held from 11 to 22 July in Maspalomas. The CAMP is a sociocultural gathering which carries out a range of activities in order to promote values of respect and solidarity in the areas of peace, social economy, and sustainable tourism using the area’s natural resources. Educational activities are used to share knowledge, experiences and discussion in order to educate young people and raise their awareness, promoting peace and solidarity.
Wars and conflicts provoke great tragedies and cause displacement of people and communities who are fleeing from terror, repression and injustice. Refugees are people who have rights under international conventions and organizations. This year’s Maspalomas Rotary International CAMP will provide an overview of the situation of refugees today and the steps being taken to consolidate a place of peace in Gran Canaria and Maspalomas.
Casa África is participating in the conference by hosting the conference on child soldiers, chaired by Chema Caballero at its headquarters on Tuesday 19 July at 5.00pm. In addition, the short film Aquel no era yo (That was not me) by Esteban Crespo will be screened. Free admission.
Chema Caballero holds a Degree in Law and a Master’s in Human Rights and Conflict Resolution. He arrived in Sierra Leone in 1992 and for two decades he directed programmes for human rights, and rehabilitation and reintegration of child soldiers; this last programme has been a model for other countries. He has been an expert witness at the Special Court for Sierra Leone. He is currently coordinator of the NGO DYES and author of the blog Bajo el mango (Under the mango), from Mundo Negro Digital, co-author of the blog África no es un País (Africa is not a country), in El País, a collaborator in Planeta Futuro (Future Planet) in the same newspaper and author of Los hombres leopardo se están extinguiendo (The leopard-men are becoming extinct), among other publications.
The III CAMP is organised by the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the Rotary clubs of Maspalomas, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Arucas, Lanzarote and Costa Teguise, District 2201 of Rotary Spain, the City Council of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, the Cabildo of Gran Canaria and Casa África.
