II Jornadas sobre Cooperación y Desarrollo. Comunicación

Concerned about the determining influence of the media in shaping opinion and, therefore, in the creation and support of mainstream thinking, the Royal Economic Society of Friends of Gran Canaria (RSEAPGC) has organised its second conference on Cooperation and Development, to be held at its headquarters on 19 and 20 January 2017.

These seminars aim to open a public debate in which various communications professionals, both global and local, bring us their views on the relationship between communication, cooperation and development.

The mainstream media, mostly owned by large financial or business groups, create a single narrative through their own interpretation of the world, affecting how people understand it. Thus, the mainstream media, in defence of the interests of a few, condition and manipulate the view of the whole population of the planet.

Therefore, it is necessary to open this public debate which will revolve around two round tables, one of them focused on local communication and the other on global communication. This will allow us to consider the current direction taken by the world of communication as well as - and perhaps this is the most relevant aspect - providing us with alternative sources of information.

The sessions are:

Thursday 19 January at 7pm Session 1: Communication for Cooperation and Development. A local perspective, with Ana Henríquez, Ángeles Jurado, Ahmed Bachir, Juan Carlos Hernández Atta and Txema Santana.

Friday 20 January at 7pm Session 2: Communication for Cooperation and Development. A global perspective, with Arantxa Freire, Nicolás Castellano, Pepe Naranjo, Jean-Arsène Yao and Ayoze O’Shanahan.

At the end of these sessions, the RSEAPGC will prepare a summary document to serve both as a record of discussions and as a reference for future proceedings.
