II Encuentro de Periodistas África – España

Welcome to the 2nd Meeting of Journalists from Africa & Spain, organised by Casa África. Our vision is to develop networks between journalists and other communications professionals from Africa and Spain, providing a space for meeting and reflection. The event will once again bring together journalists, journalism students, communicators, members of civil society and representatives from institutions and non-governmental organisations from Spain and Africa.

This meeting is taking place two years after the inaugural event which we also held here in Madrid. We can see that progress has been made in the information which our media generates about the African continent, but also that there is still a need to commit to greater inclusion of African voices and experts. This was a key focus of the initiative’s inaugural meeting which was held at the end of 2016 and was attended by more than 300 people (participants and general public). We have subtitled this second meeting Other ways of communicating Africa, which refl ects the same demand from both sides: to expose the general public in Spain to more perspectives, stories and facts that break with the stereotypes, clichés and ignorance that surround a continent which is under-represented and mostly badly reported in the Western media.

In addition to deepening the discussion of all these issues and continuing to develop Spanish-African networks, this initiative offers a platform to encourage and support the initiation of common projects.

For their cooperation, we must thank the Obra Social “la Caixa” and CaixaForum; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation; the Government of the Canary Islands; Casa Árabe; the World Tourism Organisation (WTO) and Binter. Through their support, they express their commitment to Africa and Spanish-African relations as do we and all those participating in the meeting.
