El noma infantil. Conferencia de Pep Campaner
Children's noma is a disease caused by malnutrition and lack of hygiene that destroys the face of children that contract it, and can even cause their death. Its evolution is very fast, but so is its cure. It is achieved with two or three high doses of antibiotics if it is diagnosed in time, and from there comes the importance of the constant work in prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
A married couple formed by Pep Campaner and Marilena Navarro found out about the seriousness of the disease when in 1995 they took in a 4 year old girl that had been transferred to Mallorca to be operated on to reconstruct her face. Pep then decided to travel to Niger to get to know the reality of these children and from then decided to commit himself to improving their situation. From there the Campaner Foundation was created, which since then works to improve the quality of life of these children and their families.
Mr Campaner worked for RIU Hotels when he decided to start up this project and since then the hotel chain has been his major sponsor. He is still employed by the hotel chain but devotes 100% of his time to the Foundation. The organisation has nearly a thousand private donors. The institutions in the Balearic Islands and Cataluña have also supported his projects providing him with financial backing and hospital installations. However due to cutbacks, this institutional support has dwindled, which has encouraged the Campaner Foundation to expand its cooperation network.
In the health field, the Foundation works in the treatment and refuge of sick children at its centres of Niamey and Diffa (Niger) and their transfer to Spain for the surgical interventions, as well as their recovery and reintegration into their families and communities. As time has passed, this work has also expanded into the training of children in its workshop and shelter, with grants for higher studies, awareness through educational visits to towns and prevention through building water wells, micro-loans and a cereal bank.
To talk about all of this Pep Campaner comes to Las Palmas of Gran Canaria and will address this conference that will take place in Casa África on16th January at 7p.m. Free admission.
