El Club de Lectura de Casa África lee "Nuestra hermana aguafiestas"

Casa África holds a new meeting of the book club by reading Our sister the spoilsport, by the author from Ghana, Ama Ata Aidoo. The meeting, which will be moderated by the writer and journalist Ángeles Jurado, will take place on Thursday 26th February at 7:00 p.m. at the Nelson Mandela Auditorium in Casa África.

Ama Ata Aidoo is a poet, novelist, critic, and a story writer, born in Ghana and considered to be one of Africa´s greatest authors. Her innovative style and her defence of women´s position in the continent permeate her works.

Her childhood took place in a mixed atmosphere between Western education and a strong awareness of African traditions.

In her native country, Aidoo worked as a teacher for some time, and during a brief period (1982) as the Minister of Education.  However, because her opinions were considered too radical for the regime, she was forced to resign and leave the country. Since then, she has lived in Harare, Zimbabwe, and in the United States.

Her ability as a writer did not waver and she has received several prizes. All of her works display a theme focused on women and their role in society. For the writer, freedom in Africa is directly linked to the freedom of women. For this reason, many of her characters challenge the stereotypical role of women.

Since the sixties of the twentieth century, Ama Ata Aidoo has been questioning men and women, black and white, in the same way with her work and her life. From the relentless gaze on Europe with Our sister the spoilsport, Aidoo breaks our certainties, erodes our very good complacency and undermines our excuses for not addressing the speeches and the effects of power in a global world built on injustice and inequality. Like Audre Lorde, Aidoo look at us in the eye and says: "I'm doing my job. Are you doing yours? ".
