El Club de Lectura de Casa África lee "Mañana cumpliré 20 años", de Alain Mabanckou

Casa África has once again started up its Reading Club, with which it hopes to continue bringing African literature closer to everyone that wants to take part.

The meetings will take place at Casa África's headquarters on the last Thursday in the month at 7 p.m. and will last approximately one and half hours.

The works are discussed and led by Ángeles Jurado, journalist and technician from Casa África's Media Communication Area.

In the second session of this second stage, which will take place on Thursday 28th February 2013, there will be a discussion on the book Tomorrow I will  be 20 years old, from the Congolese writer Alain Mabanckou and which belongs to Casa África's Literature Collection.

This book, which Casa África's Reading Club is now reading, is a story about the sentimental education of a boy in a real warren of love stories. It is about Michel, who is accused of having certain spells. A boy who at ten years old is in the middle of learning about life, friendship, and love whilst the Congo experiences its first decade of independence.

There are episodes of a gruesome and happy family history with comic situations and colourful characters such as Michel's adoptive father, a receptionist at the Victory Palace hotel; his mother Pauline, who sometimes finds it difficult to educate her troubled only son; uncle René, a loud mouth, who is rich and also however opportunely communist; or Caroline, who causes a furious shake up of hormones in Michel.

The author, Alain Mabanckou, was born in 1966 in the Republic of Congo and spent his childhood in Pointe-Noire, the country's economic capital. He graduated from Literature and Philosophy, later starting Law. After working in different universities in the United States, he is currently a professor for French speaking compared Literature Studies at UCLA, the University of California-Los Angeles.

This Congolese writer has often been given many prizes, with his most award-winning works from his bibliography being 'Verre Cassé' and 'Mémoires de porc-épic.'  Alain Mabanckou is an author of novels, poetry books and different stories that have been published in different newspapers such as Le Figaro (Paris) or Le Soir (Brussels); as well as writing other collective works such as Nouvelles d’Afrique (Stories from Africa, 2003) or Vu de la lune, Nouvelles optimistes (Seen from the moon, optimistic stories, 2005).

Those interested in taking part in Casa África's Reading Club should send an email  to cultura@casafrica.es as places are limited. Once you have received confirmation to be a member of the Reading Club, you will be able to take away a copy of the work together with the guidelines for its reading.
