Diálogo con Mona Eltahawy
The Three Cultures Foundation, in collaboration with Casa África and Capitan Swing, is hosting the presentation of the essay “The hymen and the hijab: why the Arab world needs a sexual revolution” by the Egyptian journalist Mona Eltahawy, who will be accompanied by Ángeles Jurado, journalist and communications officer at Casa África.
In The Hymen and the Hiyab, Eltahawy makes a searing condemnation of the repressive forces - political, cultural and religious - that reduce millions of women to the status of second-class citizens.
A regular contributor to media such as The Guardian, The New York Times and the BBC, in November 2011 she was arrested, beaten and raped by riot police in her own country. In 2012, she was named by Newsweek as one of its 150 “women who shake the world”. Time recognised her as “person of the year” along with other activists from around the world, and Arabian Business magazine named her as one of the 100 most influential Arab women.
The talk will take place on 28 March 2019 at 7:30pm at the Fundación Tres Culturas (Calle Max Planck nº2, Isla de la Cartuja 41092 Seville)
Admission is free, but prior booking is required.
Translation from English into Spanish will be offered and there will be book sales and signings after the conversation.
