Día Internacional de la Infancia. Encuentro Intercultura: "Todos los Niños del Mundo"
"A child with a book of poetry in their hands will never hold a weapon as an adult"
Gloria Fuertes in her poem El Niño Somalí (“The Somali Child”)
The Intercultura project was born in 2012 in order to stimulate and develop, in students from different Gran Canaria schools, the ability to work and promote cultural exchange between students from different countries of origin.
Through the Intercultura project, students from this multicultural society work intensely on a specific subject across different disciplines: Literature, History, Art, Music, etc.
This year, Gloria Fuertes’ poem, El Niño Somali, served as a starting point for activities that pupils from five schools have been engaged in for International Children's Day, celebrated on 20 November. The participating schools have worked on childhood in different continents, with the aim of involving young people and encouraging them to give their point of view through a work of their choosing which they have prepared in the classroom with their teachers’ support and will now present in Casa África.
The discussion will focus on children, and in particular on children in conflict countries, a harsh reality that persists even if the social context changes.
Gloria Fuertes’ poem leaves us with a message which is still current and which encourages us to remain vigilant and to work together to ensure that not a single child has to endure the harsh conditions of a conflict.
The centres taking part in this meeting are: Canterbury School, Colegio Nuestra Sra. de las Nieves, IES Guía, IES Poeta Tomás Morales Castellano and IES Arguineguín. They will present their work during a morning that will end with a debate between two professionals who have first-hand experience of serious conflicts in Africa: Chema Caballero and Concha Casajús.
The event will begin at 9am with the exhibition of students’ work at Casa África’s headquarters and the talk/debate is scheduled to begin at about 12:30pm. Free admission until capacity is reached.
