Congreso de Derecho a la Información de la Ciudadanía
The Unión de Profesionales de la Comunicación de Canarias (UPCC, Canary Islands Union of Communication Professionals), a union federated by the Federación de Sindicatos de Periodistas (FeSP, Spanish Federation of Journalist Unions) and the International Federation of Journalists, has organised this Congress for Citizen´s Right to Information, which will take place in Casa África on the 28th and 29th of January 2011.
The objective of this Congress is to make apparent the great importance of citizens having access to accurate, relevant, diligent and responsible information so they may make use of their human rights.
This Congress does not only aim to focus on the freedom (or lack thereof) that exists in local, regional and national media; it also hopes to exercise the role that the tri-continentality of this city offers in order to share common experiences and realities from the three continents. Europe, America and Africa, with a special focus on the later which, due to proximity reasons, has an importance presence in the archipelago´s news media.
Additionally, this Congress will be the first for the year on the schedule of events that will take place throughout Spain to commemorate the FeSP´s tenth anniversary, for which the central theme will be the Universal Right to Information (just as for the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria event).
