Conferencia Internacional: África en la perspectiva del G20
The international community looks towards Africa and recent developments on the continent with hopeful anticipation. As a result of this anticipation, the next G20 summit, which will bring together the world's largest economies in July 2017 in the city of Hamburg, Germany, will put a special emphasis on Africa as a priority region. Many African leaders are invited to join this G20 summit to discuss closer cooperation between the international community and African countries.
The policies adopted by the G20 have a direct impact on Africa’s development, while events in Africa influence global prosperity and stability. Key examples of this strong interdependence between Africa and the G20 are climate change, the consequences of the financial crisis, pandemics, terrorism, migration and refugee crises.
Spain has a special interest in Africa and the events on this continent. As a direct neighbour of Africa, which also regularly participates in the G20 summits, Spain will pay special attention to this upcoming Africa-focused meeting and future prospects for closer cooperation with its African neighbours.
In the framework of the G20, think tanks from Africa and the T20 analyze how G20 policy affects African countries and vice versa. They will develop recommendations on which areas of the G20 can build alliances with Africa for sustainable development and how this should be done.
The Elcano Royal Institute is one of these reflection groups and, together with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, is organizing this international conference in its headquarters in Madrid. Casa África will be represented by its director general, Luis Padrón, who will moderate the session that takes as its title “Stability, governance and intra-state conflicts. Challenges for development in Africa”. Participating in this first panel are Catherine Samba Panza, Emmanuel Gyimah-Boadi, María Teresa Fernández de la Vega and Ignacio Cartagena.
The objective of this conference is to serve as a preparation for Spain’s contribution to the next G20 summit: to discuss the current situations in African countries and the possibilities and prospects for future cooperation with them.
The other panels that make up this conference are:
-“Structural Transformation and Digitization of African Economies”, with Ibrahim Mayaki, Dorcas Muthoni, Myriam Gómez Nogueira and Rafael Gómez Jordana-Moya
-“Jihadism and security in Africa”, with Laurent Bossard, Lori-Anne Théroux-Bénoni, Fernando Reinares and a representative of the National Intelligence Centre (CNI)
- “The agenda for cooperation within the Africa 2063 Agenda. The strategic framework for the socio-economic transformation of the African Union”
The meeting’s programme includes the reading of the conclusions at six in the evening by Dr Wilhelm Hofmeister, Director of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation for Spain and Portugal; Luis Padrón, Director General of Casa África; and Charles Powell, Director of the Elcano Royal Institute
