Club de Lectura Casa África: 'El fuego de los orígenes' de Emmanuel Dongala
The group will be coordinated by the writer Antonio Lozano.
The work by Emmanuel Dongala, El fuego de los orígenes (The Fire of Origins), which corresponds to the Casa Africa literature collection, will be discussed.
Emmanuel Dongola, of a Central African mother and Congolese father, was born in the Republic of Congo in 1941. He studied in the United States and taught at the University of Brazzaville, where he also held a leadership position. The civil war that devastated his country forced him to emigrate. He is currently a chemistry professor at Simon´s Rock College (Massachusetts), and a professor of African Literature in French at Bard College in New York.
The contrasts of El fuego de los orígenes (The Fire of Origins) make this work a complete fresco of Africa´s colonisation and independence. Mandala Mankuku, "who brings down those that are powerful," faces the dilemma of preserving tradition or blindingly submitting to it. Through the passionate narration of his life, the great questions that have always affected man are considered: Is progress a way of fleeing in a forward direction? Is man able to survive the agony of emptiness? Is a society that does not accept differences considered to be fair? Is love stronger than laws? With a rich and colourful language, this marvellous novel entraps us with its new light.
