Club de Lectura Casa África con la obra 'Los pescadores', del escritor nigeriano Chigozie Obioma

Casa África is holding a new meeting of its Reading Club, which this time has read “The Fishermen” by the Nigerian writer Chigozie Obioma.

This new Reading Club meeting will be on Wednesday 15 June at 6pm and will take place in Casa África. Afterwards, participants are invited to attend the presentation of the book “Perhaps Dakar” by Pablo Martín Carbajal, which will take place, also in Casa África, at 8pm.

As always, the meeting will be chaired by Ángeles Jurado who is a journalist, writer, Africanist, inveterate reader and member of the Casa África team.

Chigozie Obioma is a Nigerian writer and an assistant professor of literature and creative writing at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The New York Times has defined him as “Chinua Achebe’s heir”. This book, The Fishermen, which has been read by the members of the Casa África Reading Club, is his first novel and was nominated for, among others, the 2015 Man Booker Prize.

In the novel, Chigozie Obioma tells the story of four siblings affected by a curse uttered by the village madman. Against the background of the annulled 1993 elections, a key moment in Nigeria's history, the author weaves a parable about the problems of his native country, addressing issues such as colonization, corruption and fratricide with subtlety and depth. What does the prophecy of a mentally ill man have to do with English colonization? Does this curse have its own power, or does the power come from those who believe in it?

These and other questions will be discussed by the members of the Casa África Reading Club after having read the work.
