Charla-Debate: Primaveras árabes, yihadismo y democracia
Eduardo López Busquets, director general of Casa Árabe, gives this talk next 24th March at Casa África's Nelson Mandela Auditorium, which will be presented by Arianne Hernandez, general secretary of this institution.
Since the popular demonstrations were sparked off in Tunisia in December 2010, the Arab world has not been the same. The initial uprisings were received with infectious enthusiasm and while dictators fell, the voices of people, silenced for decades, took the public sphere. The term "Arab Spring" was coined and embraced by both media and observers as well as the participants. The romantic reminiscence of 68 in Prague seemed to be there, but also its dramatic denouement.
Four years later, the picture is quite different and the innovative spirit of the Arab Spring seems to have overshadowed by a long and uncertain winter, which especially helps jihadism. Some countries, such as Syria, Libya and Yemen, have been involved in disastrous civil wars. In Egypt, the transition to a democratic government has been interrupted by deep political divisions, military intervention, an economy in crisis and dysfunctional state institutions. Although Tunisia seems to have escaped the prevailing polarization and be on the road to a better future, it is still in a fragile socio-economic status.
To speak of this, in the framework and with the support of the Network of Casas, Eduardo López Busquets, the director general of Casa Árabe since March 2012, graduate in law from the University of Valencia, Diplomat and Masters in International Politics at the Free University of Brussels, comes to Casa África.
Until his appointment as director general of Casa Árabe, Busquet held the post of Ambassador in Mozambique since 2009. Previously he had been posted to Algeria and Iran, among other countries, as second in command of the respective Spanish embassies. He also has held diplomatic posts in Bogota, Brussels and Mexico.
During his long career, in the Presidency of the Government, and the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Defence and the Presidency, Eduardo López Busquets has focused his activity on a set of interconnected areas: political analysis, with particular interest for societies in transition; European and Euro-Mediterranean security; and public diplomacy.
After his talk, López Busquets will hold a debate on the subject with the audience.
