Canarias con Mozambique: tu ayuda, su medicina
On Thursday 11 April at 7:30pm, in its auditorium, Casa África is hosting a presentation by Dr Luis López on the situation of the Beira Hospital in Mozambique after Cyclone Idai.
Dr López is in charge of Cooperation for the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) and directs the training programme for medical specialists in Mozambique, which is carried out with the participation of the SCS, the Ministry of Health of Mozambique and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID). This programme is the final step of the cooperation project between the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), the SCS and the University of Zambezi in Mozambique (UniZambezi) which began in 2011 at the Faculty of Medicine in Tete and which has been extended from the training of second year students at this faculty to the training of specialist doctors in Mozambique.
The arrival of Cyclone Idai on 14 and 15 March left countless dead, missing and displaced in Malawi, Zimbabwe and especially Mozambique. The figures: more than 700 people dead, 200 missing, 400,000 displaced and 2.8 million affected. This data makes it the worst cyclone on record in Africa and is a clear demonstration of climate change, which will continue to affect the most disadvantaged in the near future.
The hospital where Dr López works training specialists is in Beira, a city which has 500,000 inhabitants. 90% of the city was destroyed. Prices have risen by 600% since the cyclone, as it happened just before the harvest was gathered in. This is causing famine, to which will be added the problems caused by diseases such as cholera, typhus, measles and malaria.
In this talk, Dr López will explain the current situation in the country from which he has just returned. Specifically, he will tell us about Beira and the hospital in which he works, so the event will be used to raise funds for the reconstruction and resourcing of this hospital which was devastated by the cyclone.
