Building the Africa-Europe Partnership: what next?
The international conference "Building an Africa-Europe society: and what now?" is organised by 3 Portuguese institutions - the Institute for International and Strategic Studies, IEEI, a reflection group; the Marquês de Valle Flôr Institute, IMVF, a non-governmental development organisation; and the ISCTE-IUL Centre for African studies, CEA, an academic institution- and the European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM).
Casa África's General Director takes part in this international conference as the moderator in the round table of the third session, dedicated to security. The table is called Radical armed groups in North Africa, Sahel and neighbouring countries: what implications for international security and EU-Africa relations?, and in it will participate: Alexandra Magnólia Dias, Joao Bernardo Honwana, Maurice Engueleleguele and Morten Boas.
Over the next few years important decisions will be taken on development targets and priorities as part of the relations between the EUROPEAN UNION and AFRICA, which must be reported with politically oriented research and according to multidisciplinary discussions that capture the complexity of the new global dynamics. Although global security and challenges of development have deep implications for developing countries and developed countries, for civil society and civil servants with decision-making powers, in Europe and Africa, they are still not properly understood in terms of their impact on both continents and in their relationship.
With regards to the EUROPEAN UNION-AFRICA Summit that will be held in 2014, the conference points to the debate of some of the main issues that will influence the building of an Africa-Europe society and on cooperation in international development over the next few years. The definition of an after 2015 in the global development agenda, which will necessarily link complex issues such as security, the environment, governance and growth, will be the basis of the discussions in the sessions.
The discussions will be organised in 4 sessions and a panel:
- Session 1: International crisis Impact on Europe and Africa and its relationship
- Session 2: Demographic challenges on the sustainability of the growth model and outlook for aid.
- Session 3: Threats to security. North Africa, Sahel and neighbouring countries
- Session 4: Development flows and actors. New donors and investors and aid vs business
- Panel: Outlook for the Future. EUROPEAN UNION - AFRICA Summit 2014 Development Agenda after 2015
Each session will be opened by guest speakers followed by a debate between them and the audience. The panels will put together a group of experts who will talk on issues and outlooks for an Africa-Europe society over the next few years. The speakers will be members of the European-African Research Network which brings together 25 academic institutions, think tanks and civil society organisations.
The conference intends to involve between 60 and 80 participants of Portuguese civil society, businessmen, academics, civil servants and decision-making staff, as well as representatives from emerging economies, donor countries and institutions.
