#ÁfricaesNoticia con la presentación de "Cuadernos Africanos", de Alfonso Armada

As part of the Casa África programme #ÁfricaEsNoticia, journalist and reporter Alfonso Armada is presenting his book Cuadernos Africanos / African Notebooks at the organisation’s headquarters. The book was republished in April 2019 by Ediciones Península, who also published this fundamental text of Spanish journalism in 1998.

Armada will talk about his career as a reporter in Africa, experiences described in these notebooks which cover the period from 1994 to 1998. They began in Rwanda, during the genocide, and end in Burundi four years later. Armada ended his journalistic journey here as special envoy for Africa at El País, a vocation he abandoned in order to head to New York to work for a new newspaper, ABC.

This volume of stories and notes includes published reports, theatrical sketches, information and personal reflections written during those years in the hotels, bars and roads of the African continent.

Armada will be introduced by the journalist and member of the Casa África team, Joan Tusell.

African Notebooks is a journey to the heart of Africa. To Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Angola, Mozambique, Somalia, Sudan, Liberia, South Africa, Congo-Brazzaville and Tanzania. It is a descent into hell through the notebooks (public and private) of Alfonso Armada from which no reader will emerge unscathed. A thrilling journey, in sharp prose and fluid Castilian, through the torn reality of many of these countries.

Airports that are caves of thieves, markets turned into human rubbish tips, open spaces where illness and death work at will... Between the emotion of the poetic diary and the reflexive synthesis of the journalistic chronicle, between disenchantment with the inevitable and the fascination of unknown cultures, these five notebooks throw a hopeful cry of rage and horror to the four winds from the forgotten continent.

Alfonso Armada was born in Vigo in 1958 and his work as a journalist includes coverage of the siege of Sarajevo and the Rwandan genocide. He was deputy editor of the magazine Teatra, Africa correspondent for the newspaper El País from 1994 to 1998 and ABC correspondent in New York from 1999 to 2005. He is president of the Spanish section of Reporters Without Borders.

#ÁfricaEsNoticia is a series of talks on African current affairs by Spanish and African experts that invites us to debate, think and get ever closer to Africa. The title also refers to the section of the Casa África website which is updated daily with the main news about Africa.
