Ilumináfrica es una fundación sin ánimo de lucro que se fundó en el año 2007 por un grupo de personas procedentes de diferentes profesionales involucrados en un proyecto común. Este consiste en contribuir a que las personas de los países en vías de desarrollo con dificultades visuales y sin recursos económicos puedan acceder a una atención visual de calidad proporcionada por sus propios servicios sanitarios.

La primera expedición comenzó el 13 de noviembre de 2007 en uno de los países más pobres del mundo: Chad y, desde entonces, la fundación ha realizado 52 expediciones, 5.164 intervenciones quirúrgicas, 20.096 consultas de oftalmología y optometría, y se han entregado más de 5.956 gafas graduadas y 5.064 gafas de sol. Este primer destino fue elegido porque Chad se encuentra entre los diez países más pobres del mundo, por lo que los medios económicos escasos en la sanidad han hecho que esta dependa casi exclusivamente de las ONG.  

La Fundación no solo cuenta con personal sanitario, sino también con una valiosa red de voluntarios que colabora en aspectos como la logística o marketing y comunicación. Así mismo, la Fundación tiene actualmente 49 socios fundacionales, y se rige por un patronato compuesto mayormente por oftalmólogos y personas que están convencidas de que ver es un derecho universal.
