Global Sounds

The six musicians of the group Ekomefeemo combine the styles of many different regions of Africa in an unorthodox style. The Griot Music Company offers a crossover of jazz elements with West African rhythms and griot songs. The group Lasmar demonstrates that the bagpipes are not unique to Scotland. Known as the mizwad, it is part of everyday musical life in the Tunisian section of the Sahara Desert. The sound of the group Mix Squard is based on reggae rhythms.

Miss Calypso

This reissue was probably motivated by the exotica-space age pop revival. The cover, after all, features Angelou draped in a slip of a red dress, gyrating next to a fire in the middle of a (almost definitely fake) jungle. It's really not that strange or cheesy, though. It's more or less straight-ahead pop-calypso, sung with respectable gutsiness by Angelou, who wrote almost half of the material. Somewhat in the mold of the popular calypso recordings from the same era by Harry Belafonte, it features sparse backing from guitarist Tommy Tedesco (one of the most frequently employed L.A.

Music from the hearts of the masters

Foday Musa Suso, the innovative Griot and Kora master, is a tireless ambassador of African culture whose solo work and collaborations with the likes of Philip Glass and Herbie Hancock are now considered classics. Jack DeJohnette, one of Jazz music's greatest drummers, has been a part of countless musical milestones from Miles Davis' Bitches Brew to last year's Grammy Nominated Out Of Towners with Keith Jarrett and Gary Peacock. These two undisputed masters of their instruments create a sublime interplay and sound that encompasses world beat, global chill, and contemporary improvised music.

The river

Ten songs from the legendary singer from Mali

Ali Farka Toure, vocals, guitar, calabash, bongos. the Malian guitarist in his full solo acoustic glory for a beautiful, intimate music that recalls American blues. The beauty of Ali Farka Toure lives in Toure's light, nimble touch on the strings as well as his flexible, reedy voice, which both perfectly complement his gentle, ambling rhythmic style. Tastier highlights include the cantering "Tchigi Fo," with haunting call-and-response sung in Songhai, and the oddly pastoral "Kadi Kadi," a sweet folk song about an encounter with a young woman and her gift of a gold chain.

Stalemate fear not for man

Originally released in 1977, this is a studio recording so it has a more polished sound than on the recent Best Best. BTW, none of these tracks are on Best Best... Stalemate and Fear not for Man are the stand outs, but the rest of album is good too. It's another intoxicating organic mixture of African harmonies, bebop, and James Brown. Listen to the samples!.
