El Ecowas Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency es un órgano especializado de la Comunidad Económica de Estados de África Occidental (CEDEAO), con sede en Praia (Cabo Verde), cuyo objetivo es el desarrollo de políticas energéticas sostenibles y eficientes, tanto a nivel regional como nacional, y la creación de un entorno favorable para la consolidación de un mercado de energías renovables en la región.
El ECREEE ha sido la primera organización regional, después de la Unión Europea, en elaborar y disponer de un Plan de Energías Renovables y de un Plan de Eficiencia Energética, motivo por el cual Africa Occidental y el ECREEE constituyen un referente para otras regiones africanas. En muy poco tiempo, el centro ha logrado tejer una importante red de alianzas a nivel internacional (ONUDI, PNUMA, Global Environment Fund, Global Forum on Sustainable Energy, IRENA…), que le han llevado a ocupar una posición protagonista para África Occidental en el marco de la iniciativa de Naciones Unidas en materia de acceso universal a la energía sostenible, Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All).

ECREEE’s mandate is also perfectly aligned with the broader strategic goals of ECOWAS Vision 2020. It seeks to realize directly two of the components of this vision, namely: (1) ‘A region that anchors its development on sustainable development, including agricultural and mineral resource development strategy, and on planned agricultural and industrial strategies; a region that develops its infrastructure and makes services accessible to its citizens and enterprises.’ (2) ‘A region that conserves its environment and resources, promotes modes of equitable and sustainable development in economic, social and environmental fields; a region which brings its contribution to bear on resolution of the common problems and challenges confronting the planet.’

Abengoa reafirma su compromiso con el sector de la energía y el medioambiente, apostando por el negocio del agua y creando en octubre de 2011, en primera línea de su organización, un nuevo grupo de negocio: Abengoa Water. Con anterioridad pertenecía a la unidad de negocio Befesa pero se desligó de ésta tras producirse una escisión con Abeima, centrada en el diseño y construcción de las plantas operadas y mantenidas por Abengoa Water.
Abengoa Water se centra en la promoción, desarrollo y explotación de plantas de tratamiento de agua, especialmente en el negocio de desalación debido a la escasez y falta de tratamientos de agua adecuados que acontecen en la actualidad.
El liderazgo y reputación de Abengoa Water han sido reconocidos en numerosas ocasiones mediante premios y distinciones entre los que cabe destacar los concedidos por la prestigiosa publicación internacional Global Water Intelligence (GWI), en su entrega anual de premios Global Water Awards, otorgando a Abengoa Water, en aquel entonces todavía Befesa, una distinción especial al "Mejor Proyecto del Año 2009" por la desaladora de Qingdao (China) y el premio a la "Empresa Desaladora del Año 2009".
