El Instituto de Investigación de Okavango (ORI) de la Universidad de Botsuana se dedica al estudio de los humedales y las zonas áridas adyacentes. La necesidad de mayor información científica acerca del ecosistema delta del Okavango llevó al Gobierno de Botsuana a fundar el ORI bajo los auspicios de la Universidad de Botsuana en 1994. El objetivo de ORI es ser un instituto pionero en la investigación de humedales y zonas áridas adyacentes en África y en el mundo para el 2023 y años posteriores. Su misión es llevar a cabo una investigación comprometida y ofrecer formación y servicios sobre los ecosistemas de humedales y zonas áridas adyacentes.
