Seminario: La seguridad en África ¿Un nuevo reto para la Unión Europea?
The Robert Schuman Institute of Francisco de Vitoria (UFV) University organises this activity, sponsored by the Spanish Institute for Strategic Studies. This seminar will discuss security in Africa and Aristides Leon, Head of Support Unit for the Directorate General of Casa Africa will take part in it, with a speech on EU-Africa cooperation.
The seminar Security in Africa: A new challenge for the European Union? will take place on Thursday 28th November 2013 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the graduates hall of Francisco de Vitoria University (Madrid).
Relations between the European Union and Africa have been traditionally carried out in two regional groups: African countries that are part of ACP countries and African countries located around the Mediterranean. However, at the beginning of the new millennium, the European Union started a new dialogue with Africa to build a strategic partnership with the entire continent to strengthen existing measures.
The first ministerial meeting between the representatives of Africa and the EU took place on 11th October 2001 in Brussels. From the Cairo Summit there has been progress, particularly in the areas of regional integration, food security, human rights, democracy and good governance.
Since the adoption of the action plan, other important topics have been added to the agenda, such as the creation of the African Union (AU) which this year celebrated its 50th anniversary, the New Association for the Development of Africa (NEPAD); the situation in the Great Lakes region, or the fight against terrorism.
Both continents should define the priorities in their dynamic relationship, especially now that global and regional changes require a review, including cuts in the budgets of developed countries because of the global economic downturn and the growing challenge to Europe's traditional action on the continent by the new world players.
All these topics will be covered in this seminar:
