Casa África hosts the book launch My name is Suleiman (Editorial Anaya, 2014), written by Antonio Lozano a writer from Gran Canaria. The event will take place on Thursday, 24th April at 7.30 p.m. in Casa África's Nelson Mandela Auditorium and will include the participation of Antonio Lozano, the book's author; Juan Montero, philosopher and writer, and José Luis Márquez, Casa África's manager. Admission is free with limited capacity.
The novel, aimed at a young audience, shows the life of Suleiman, who tired of the terrible poverty in his country, Mali, decides to leave with his friend Musa to prosperous Europe. There they hope to work and get enough money to return and set up their businesses to help their families, but the journey is difficult. The novel recounts his arduous journey across the desert in uncomfortable trucks which are full of expatriates who, like them, are looking for something better. They reach the border with Melilla, but there crossing over the fence will get complicated and they will be arrested and expelled to the desert to their fate. Musa dies in the sand, but Suleiman does not give up and will attempt the trip again, this time by sea.
Antonio Lozano was born in Tangier in 1956. He has a degree in Translation and Interpretation, lives in Agüimes (Gran Canaria), municipality for which he was the councillor for Culture between 1987 and 2003. He is the director of the Sur-Encuentro Teatral Tres Continentes Festival and the International Oral Narration Festival "Count on Agüimes" His first novel, Harraga, was praised by writers such as Manuel Vázquez Montalbán, Dulce Chacón and Fernando Marías. Winner of the 1st Novelpol Prize for the best thriller published in Spain, he obtained a special mention from the jury of the Silverio Cañada Memorial Prize 2003 for the best first thriller, set up by the Gijón's Thriller week. His novel El caso Sankara, was the winner of the 1st Ciudad de Carmona International Prize for Thrillers. He has also published Preludio para una muerte and Donde mueren los ríos, which was a finalist for the 1st Brigada 21 Award.
