Presentación del libro "Biografía de un desierto. El Sáhara"
Casa África and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria jointly organise the presentation of this book, Biography of a desert. The Sahara, by Pierre Rognon.
The act will take place on Thursday 1st March 2012 at 17:00 hours in the Assembly Hall of the Humanities Building of ULPGC (Pérez del Toro, nº 1, 35004, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria)
This book tells us about the Sahara, this desert that keeps in its memory the adventures of a long history: its slow drift from the South Pole, the progressive paralysis of its hydrographic networks, the creation of water and hydrocarbon reserves in its sediments are elements of its past that explain its present and allow us to face its future with more clarity.
This book brings us a clear vivid text, which combines the geological and human aspects of a fascinating region with experiences lived by the author, Pierre Rognon, during more than thirty years of research in the field.
Pierre Rognon (1931-2010) was a famous French geographer and geologist that specialised in the Sahara desert and the problems derived from desertification. He had a PhD in Science and Letters, was a Professor in Physical Geography at the Sorbonne and Professor in Earth Sciences at the University Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris), lecturer at the University Paris VII where he managed the continental means geodynamics laboratory. He was in charge of UA 722 of the CNRS, Paleoclimats et Paleoenviroments en regions arides for twelve years and from 1993 was also in charge of the European Community's Med-Campus nº 8 "Desertification and planning in the Southern Mediterranean".
