Más allá de 2020: jornada de Reflexión sobre el Partenariado UE/ACP, su presente y su futuro
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation is organizing this meeting in Casa África with the aim of deepening its cooperation with African countries, in the face of the 2020 review of a fundamental document for the eradication of poverty in the world: the Cotonou Agreement
This is an agreement focused on the gradual integration of the ACP zone (Africa, Caribbean and Pacific) into the world economy, while respecting the objectives of sustainable development. The ultimate goal of the Cotonou Agreement is the reduction of poverty, moving towards its eventual eradication in much of the world.
Signed on 23 June 2000 by representatives of the ACP and the European Community, it lays down the legal framework for cooperative relationships between the countries and a guide to economic, social and cultural development.
Peace, security, political stability and democracy are some of the cornerstones of a document that sets out long-term policies and a series of milestones, the first being in 2020 when a comprehensive review of the agreement is planned together with its renewal.
Prior to this review, Casa África will host a meeting which aims to bring the Hispano-African input to the analysis of the agreement. The meeting, organized around three themed committees discussing political, economic and cooperation issues, will be attended by 16 African ambassadors to Spain and a considerable ministerial representation.
The aim is to make this meeting an exercise in reflection that takes into account the experience of these fifteen years and articulates a more prominent and proactive Spanish position in the process of revision of the Cotonou Agreement. According to the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Ignacio Ybáñez Rubio, Spain “wants its voice to be the synthesis of the views, sensitivities and experiences of the African countries which are members of the ACP.”
