Jornada: África en los medios de Comunicación
News on Africa is scarce, very often not positive and usually full of prejudices and stereotypes. It promotes an image associated with conflicts or natural catastrophes, when really there is another reality in this territory that normally does not get to the public, that of a continent full of vitality, culture and traditions, opportunities, and with a population of around 1,000 million people and 54 countries. A continent that is growing and that is very near to our archipelago.
This is the context that motivates the organisation of the Session "Africa in the Media", which will have the presence of renowned professionals from journalism, academic experts and representatives from different organisations linked to the communication sector, who will cover the media treatment that is currently given to African reality from different points of view, as well as offering a series of suggestions and guidance so as to give it an image that is more global and integrating. They will also analyse the African continent's outlook as a possible opportunity for media professionals.
Among the journalism professionals who will take part in these sessions, we find Joan Tusell, head of the communication area at Casa África, an institution that works daily to bring Africa closer to Spain through vehicles such as culture, international relations and economic links, showing the Spanish population that stereotypes in Africa are encouraged by the ignorance we have of it. Media plays an important role in improving the image that Spain has on Africa, and among the many actions that Casa África has undertaken in this field, we find the publication of its notebook no.4 Si hablas de nosotros, belonging to its collection African notebooks.
The objectives of these sessions can be summarised as:
- To reflect on the treatment that is given to information related to the African continent by the local media.
- To improve Canary Island journalists' knowledge on Africa.
- To increase the amount of news and improve its coverage and outlook.
