Fiesta África Vive 2016 en Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
On 3 and 4 June, the Miller Building in Santa Catalina Park in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria hosts the 2016 África Vive Gran Fiesta, the most entertaining and popular of the festivals that Casa África organizes in the framework of África Vive. The Gran Fiesta is a collection of activities in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Madrid in celebration of International Africa Day (25 May).
The activities are not restricted to the month of May, as the programmme extends until July, with activities like the África Vive Festival, the 7-a-side Football Tournament with the African associations, art exhibitions, conferences, and the África Vive concert, which this year takes place as part of the Canary Islands Heineken Jazz Festival on Saturday 9 July.
The África Vive Gran Fiesta 2016 is intended for all audiences, with a programme during the night of Friday 3 June with DJ sessions and African gastronomic workshops. During the day of Saturday 4 June, there will be workshops, an awards ceremony and an African gastronomic area from mid-day to 5pm.
It will include food, workshops, music and other activities. The festival will also feature information booths, and stalls selling African art and clothing, tapas of the cuisine of different African countries and a bar selling drinks.
The planned programme for the festival is shown below:
Friday 3 June 2016, Edificio Miller (Santa Catalina Park)
- 9pm - 1am Gastronomic area with representation from 9 African countries: Cape Verde, Equatorial Guinea, Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, Guinea Bissau, Nigeria, Ghana and Sierra Leone
The tasting of these dishes will be accompanied by a session of African music from DJ Mr Kangrejo
Saturday 4 June 4 2016, Edificio Miller (Santa Catalina Park)
- 11am-12 mid-day: Percussion workshop and Mask workshop.
For children of all ages - 12 mid-day -1pm: Macro African Dance Workshop with Hermanos Thioune
For adults and children over 7 years old - 1pm - 2pm: Diplay of dances from the cultural associations of Cape Verde and Equatorial Guinea
- 1pm - 6pm: African Gastronomic Area
- 1pm-5pm: African music with DJ Javier Freniche
5pm-6pm: Fashion show by designer Teresa Villarreal from Equatorial Guinea, who designs and manufactures clothes and accessories merging African and European styles in the colourful prints of her brand AFRICANAIS.
