Conferencia: Escuelas Wara Wara-Sierra Leona -CANCELADA-
Wara Wara schools (EWW) is a community-based organisation in Sierra Leon that operates mainly in Wara Wara Bafodea province. Founded in 2012, it focuses on building schools and training teachers to facilitate greater and better access to education for children in one of the poorest countries on Earth, according to the Human Development Index.
The province where EWW works has about 48,000 inhabitants and has serious deficiencies in infrastructure and communications.
To carry out the improvement of schools and ensure that children have access to quality education as a weapon to combat underdevelopment, EWW build or repair schools, with the invaluable support of the local population, who provide everything they can including their own labour. EWW also supports the training of local teachers so that they can obtain a teaching qualification from the university. Usually it’s people from the village itself who are simply literate and teach children in exchange for a small amount of money that is insufficient to support them. This means that they have to supplement their income through other activities, usually agriculture.
EWW funds these projects thanks to private donations, many of them obtained through benefit parties like the one held last 15 October in Gran Canaria.
Through the talk they’re giving in Casa África, EWW aim to continue publicising their work to raise the population’s awareness of the problems they’re trying to solve and to attract more followers to their cause. It will be on 26 October 2016 at 6:30 pm in Casa África’s Nelson Mandela Auditorium and the talk will be led by Marcos Portillo de Armenteras, who works directly on the project. Free admission until capacity is reached.
