#ÁfricaEsNoticia: Presentación del libro "La Falsa Yihad. El negocio del narcotráfico en el Sahel"

On Thursday 20th March at 8:00 pm, the presentation of the book"The False Jihad. The drug trade in the Sahel," by Beatriz Mesa Garcia, will take place in the Nelson Mandela Auditorium, who will be accompanied by journalist José Naranjo.

With this conference Casa África launches a specific programme to bring debate and reflection on the hottest topics from Africa today to its headquarters in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. # ÁfricaEsNoticia is a cycle of conferences on Africa today from Spanish and African experts invited to discuss, think and bring us even closer to Africa. The title also refers to Casa África's web section which is updated every day with the main news on Africa.

Under the title of # ÁfricaEsNoticia, the theme chosen for this first conference is the conflict in the Sahel, through a book that focuses on drug trafficking as the real axis of all the problems in the region.

The False Jihad is an essay edited by DALYA which brings together four years of research on the trail of Al Qaeda in North Africa, covering the critical situation in Mali after the last French military intervention and it analyses the consequences of the Arab Spring in the ranks of AQIM, a group that has benefited from a booming arms trafficking trade that comes from, among others, the conflict in Libya. There is an analysis of the complexity of Mauritania, Mali and Niger through the testimonies collected in the field. Corruption, drug distribution and Jihadist type terrorism, three ingredients from failed states that have created an army of more than four thousand men in the southern gateway to Europe.

There are two fundamental ideas of the work: Firstly, it seeks to show that the hierarchical terrorist structure and its well-known  "Jihad against the West" is based on profit sharing from the distribution of drugs to Europe, which for years has enjoyed the complicity of political and economic powers in the region.
Secondly, to answer the question of Islam. In the middle of this complex scenario of failed states, of drug trafficking and terrorist threat, where is Islam? It tries to show that religion is reduced to a mere instrument to attract Mujahideen to a cause where terrorist groups such as the Movement for Unity and Jihad in West Africa (MUYAO) use it to control drugs.

The author, Beatriz Mesa García, is a journalist from Cadiz with extensive experience in North Africa. Currently she is working as a correspondent for the COPE chain and is a contributor to El Periódico. Based in Rabat (Morocco) from June 2007, she makes timely contributions to other publications and has covered all the conflicts and crises that have arisen during these years in the Maghreb region.

The event at Casa África will be presented by the journalist José Naranjo from the Canary Islands, who has spent a lot of time in Mali during the recent conflict and knows the problems of the country well.
